A family story looking to the future
Ours is a family history that is intertwined with that of the territory and the many Ticino people who live it: it is a journey along the roads of Ticino, which began at the end of 1954, when siblings Bruno and Beatrice Baumgartner opened the first petrol station in Balerna Bisio 1, initially without a brand name and a shop.
A year later, Raffineria Lombarda Petroli in Villasanta, belonging to the Tagliabue Group of Monza, fuels our dream, providing the station with petrol. CIF Petrol was established in Mendrisio on behalf of the same group, displaying its brand name at the Bisio 1 service station.
In 1958 came the big breakthrough, born of an intuition of Bruno Baumgartner: open a small shop attached to the Bisio 1 petrol station to enable customers to make small purchases (such as cigarettes and chocolate) for themselves and their families.
It is the beginning of a new era, enshrined in Mendrisio with the founding of Piccadilly SA.
1959 marked another important milestone in our history: the withdrawal of CIF Petrol from the Swiss market and the arrival of the Mobil brand opened the door to another prestigious partnership with an international oil company.
In those years, the pump buzz knew no end: petrol was sold 24 hours a day, becoming a reference point for the first Italian customers who came to fill up even at night. From the beginning, we have been where roads meet, the crossroads of people who stop for a fill-up and find themselves in a welcoming, modern environment where you can find many services designed to make life easier.
It is to another great crossroads that we owe the inspiration of our name: the then mayor of Balerna, Laim, on his return from a trip to London, noticed a coming and going of cars forming a carousel in front of the Bisio petrol station and likened it to the famous Piccadilly Circus crossroads.
Today, the Piccadilly brand has 39 service stations throughout the canton of Ticino and an administrative office in Mendrisio.
